All About Reddit

As social media go, right now Facebook is truly kind, with Google (and Google plus) trying to make more waves by buying up sites like YouTube and intregrating it into the site. Twitter is moving up fast on Facebook, gaining more member everyday and adding more features, with new ones in the planning. Even Instagram is regaining some of the ground lost after a recent price stummble. But one of the most popular social media sites today. is Reddit.

As one of the top sites on the internet, Reddit is widely considered a great place to go for breaking news and discussions. However, if you do not have an account with the website you are missing out on a great deal of incredible features. Having an account on Reddit allows you to discover the more obscure subreddits and smaller discussion areas where the real magic of the site is revealed.

Creating an account on Reddit is easy. Unlike most sites these days, you do not even need to supply your e-mail address. Instead, you create a username and password and you are ready to go. There are some restrictions in place when you first start out if you do not verify an e-mail address that is associated with the account, so it is best to associate an e-mail with the account anyway. Reddit almost never sends e-mail to its users, so your inbox will not be flooded with notifications and other annoying spam.

Once you have your account created you can start figuring out what you see on your front page. Reddit is divided into communities that are known as subreddits. Each subreddit combines to make up your front page. Take a look at the subreddits you are subscribed to and unsubscribe from those that do not interest you personally. Once you are done with that, it is time to start exploring your interests.

There is no great way to find new subreddits. The best way to try is to Google an interest of yours followed by the word Reddit. If it has an active subreddit, the link to the site will probably be on the front page. Subscribe to these subreddits and you will start to see your front page grow. Eventually, when you feel comfortable you can participate in the community by commenting on links and self posts, upvoting things you like to give them more visibility and even submitting your own content. Make sure not to spam. A good rule of thumb is that only a maximum of one out of every five submissions you send in should be self-promotional. Otherwise, share cool content with the community and join in the discussion.

Eventually, you may find yourself hooked to the website. There are a lot of small nooks with incredible discussions to explore, so be sure you budget your time wisely! Being hooked on Reddit can be a huge time sink, so make sure you know what you are doing.
